The Map
Imagine a rolling stone, moving from place to place. A man maps it once, and sets its location, only to find it at a different place when he returns. The man one day decides to pick it up, and sets it at his house. If he placed it by the window, the wind would blow it away, landing on the floor. So he builds a stand. This stand complements its shape, and prevents it from rolling. The man thinks it was a fine thing, but now both the stand and the rock fall. So he builds a foundation. The foundation was prepared, and so was the stand. The rock came first, then the understanding of what it needs to be stationary. The map only pointed towards the direction where the stone was supposed to be at.
What do you believe was the most valuable to the man?
Imagine the same man… he used his map, and found a different rolling stone where he found the first, but it is different. He took it home and it didn’t fit the stand he had prepared for the first rock he encountered. So he returns and finds one he thinks is suited for the stand, not referencing the map. He places it and it still topples over from the wind, as did the rolling rock. Instead of building a foundation, he decides to glue it to the stand window pane. The rock is now fixed, and never moves. He thinks. This time, the stand shaped the search for the right rock. The glue was a substitution for the foundation. The map was never needed. The man thinks of the first rolling rock he encountered, and is not content.
He then shapes the rock.
What do you believe was the most valuable to the man?
As an introduction to each book in the Resolve Cycle Trilogy, each book opens up with a poem that is open to interpretation. These poems are at the heart of inspiration for the saga.

Its waters found: unwound compound
A spiral told - compound a pound
Its weight unfolds - a moment's sound
Book III
A song is but a moment’s thief
A memory but a moment’s grief
Moment’s unfold - a tree’s new leaf
A season ends - the theft but brief
Meaning Through Time
The riddle and opening poems act as small keys to the larger project, compressing its ideas of memory, observation, consequence, and resolve into images that only fully reveal themselves over time. Read first, they are questions; read after the story, they become evidence that the shape of the whole was present from the beginning.
